The Basics
Information technology (or IT) spans a wide array of positions, such as computer support specialists, network and system administrators, system analysts, and network security specialists.  They answer technical questions, anticipate and solve problems, and create systems for business environments.

IT personnel may work within an individual company and support its staff, or be part of a consultancy, handling an assortment of clients with different needs.  They install software and hardware, and may also be responsible for maintaining and upgrading various systems.

Where do I Begin?
Some employers require Bachelor’s degrees in computer science or information systems, while others will accept non-computer related degrees, or none at all, with a good amount of relevant computer experience.  Employers look for both technical and communication skills. The average salary for IT workers is $75,396.  Self-employed consultants have the highest median salary, followed closely by those who work for consulting companies and private firms.  IT workers at schools and universities have the lowest median salary.

Job Outlook
Opportunities in the field are expected to increase 22-30% by 2014. Technology is constantly being improved on, resulting in the need for consultants familiar with the latest programs and systems.  However, some support work is being shifted abroad, since it is cheaper and can be done remotely.  The demand for people knowledgeable about computer security continues to rise, as companies look to safeguard data and systems.
